Thank you, Jesus! We finally have an update from our orphanage after an entire day of waiting!

“We are happy to report that all is well…aside from some minor flooding and a lot of very bored children…Thank you for support during this time. However, many of the orphanage windows now have missing or broken screens. With the excess standing water, the threat of disease carrying mosquitoes is high and we desperately need to replace these screens. If you would like to contribute to these repairs or have window screening expertise/advice yourself please do not hesitate to let us know!” ~ posted by our orphanage about 30 min. ago.

As best we can tell, the worst is over for at least that area of Port-au-Prince. It is still extremely windy and rainy, but it seems the worst of the hurricane has passed them by. We are content to know that they are safe, however seeing further videos of floodwaters and damage to the streets we have grown to love and know well is difficult.

If you are looking for specific Haiti information and updates, it may not all make sense to you, but we get much of our information straight from HaitiLibre which is the equivalent of the country’s newspaper and news resource online. There is a lot of updates and coverage there. Here is the link to what we’ve seen:

I know most of the world has seen this image via Facebook and other feeds today, but this is verified, as legitimate as we can tell, an ACTUAL photo of the weatherman’s news report this morning. Take a look at the eye of the storm, the pink – if it doesn’t bother you, look again.

Disturbing, yes. That is exactly what showed up on live television this morning. Don’t believe it, here’s another…

Just a reminder, that Haiti is the ONLY country in the world that has accepted Voodoo as its official religion. It is a beautiful country but it is also threaded with darkness and spiritual oppression. It is times like these that make my heart especially heavy for those who are spiritually blinded by darkness.

Take it as you will, but we have been praying constantly all day long. As I was walking the dog this afternoon, in the dog-park-that’s-really-owned-by-Vancouver-school-district-but-that-all-dog-owners-use-to-exercise-their-dogs-and-step-on-overripe-walnut-tree-droppings-and-coyote-poop-and-irresponsible-dog-owner-poop-because-they-“can’t-seem-to-pass-the-bond”-but-really-the-last-homeowner-is-holding-out-and-refusing-to-sell-property (WHEW. Yes, I needed an effort at humorous relief),

uhhhh….lost my train of thought. Story of my life.

Ok. Walking the dog. Prayer. Dog poop (Melissa K., I know its your dog’s mess!! Stop denying it!) LOL – I was praying over my son, over his nanny, over the staff there, and over the orphanage. (The Lord and I have some incredible talks in that quiet field! If you’re nearby, you should try it sometime, it is absolutely an incredible place to just be peaceful and listen to what He has to say). God brought to my heart the words to a song that was sung during worship at the church my family and I visited over the weekend – It is by Hillsong, from the Album “You Make Me Brave” and it is called “It Is Well”. Here is the link It Is Well (Live) (Bethel Music). There is a line in the bridge that says, “The waves and wind still know His name”. That line kept running through my head the rest of the walk, and the rest of my day – a reminder that the God who breathed life, movement and being into the wind and the waves forever and always calls them by name, and they will always know the sound of His voice, and follow the divine voice of their Creator.

As I’m sitting down to write this post, I looked up the rest of the lyrics, just to give context and I was blown away with how applicable the words were to today’s events with Hurricane Matthew:

Grander earth has quaked before
Moved by the sound of His voice
Seas that are shaken and stirred
Can be calmed and broken for my regard

And through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
And through it all, through it all
It is well

And through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
It is well with me

Verse 2
Far be it from me to not believe
Even when my eyes can’t see

And this mountain that’s in front of me
Will be thrown into the midst of the sea

Through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
Through it all, through it all
It is well
It is well

Bridge x3
So let go my soul and trust in Him
The waves and wind still know His name

It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well it is well with my soul x3

Chorus x2 (softly slowly)
Through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
Through it all, through it all
It is well with me.

Let go – let go of whatever it is that is causing anxiety, let go of the burden of trying to fix things that you have no control over, let go of trying to be someone you’re not, let go of constantly trying to be “sane” and “with it” and/or “supermom” or “superdad” for that matter! Let go of allowing your heart to be twisted up in your throat in absolute agony over your relationship with your husband or wife, or child, or parent – Know that through it all – GOD’S GOT YOUR BACK. He’s got you. He’s holding you safely in the palm of his hand, the weathered creases of his skin make some pretty amazing nooks and crannies to settle into, let me tell you! If you don’t know Him personally – get to know Him. Or get to know Him again – the peace and absolute rest in knowing for certain that you don’t have to walk this path alone is such sweet relief!

Today as much as we kept ourselves updated as much as we could with the information from credible sources on the ground in Haiti, we fixed our eyes on Jesus – trusting that His protective hand would be on W and the orphanage, and that His sovereignty and His voice would conquer all opposition.

I’m not going to pretend that because my child is safe, all is okay and my world can keep spinning normally – there is so much devastation and there are towns that are completely washed out, thousands upon thousands of people displaced, floodwaters raging down streets and through homes, carrying everything that once was held dear to someone rushing down the swirling brown mess that seems to have no end. There are areas that are “safe”, that have minor flooding and broken screens/windows, and now their struggle will be finding clean water, supplies/food, etc. as many of their normal routes to provisions are washed out or underwater completely. There are bridges washed out that connect villages with their food supplies and occupations. There will be a massive undertaking both stateside and throughout the surrounding nations to provide aid and help – I’m sure an eerie deja vu experience for those who lived through the massive earthquake just 6 years ago.

To help give some direction, if you are looking for somewhere to give or donate to, please direct your donations to organizations that reside IN the country of Haiti, many of these are better equipped to funnel funds appropriately and provide the most value and most immediate benefit to people in need within their country. Many times there can be so many overhead costs involved with larger worldwide organizations that the countries desperately in need see only a minor part of those donations. If anyone would like specific direction for donations, please email us privately, and we can pass on some reputable organizations we know of that are preparing their relief efforts. Our son’s school (and the school that many of the O kids attend) is preparing to receive shipping containers from New York with food and supplies to help those in the surrounding village who need aid. They are accepting donations immediately and we can get you in touch. If you are looking for a different type of organization, please let us know and we will send you a few other recommendations.

“Through it all, through it all my eyes are on You…It is well, with me.”

Thank you for journeying with us – for your prayers, and for the 37 text messages I received in the wee hours of the morning and consistently throughout the day, checking on our boy, and checking on our hearts! To do life without Jesus by our sides and without friends and family like you, would not be living at all!

  1. Laura I have been praying for your family, for little W who I’m sure can’t wait for hugs and kisses from his family. I have been praying for Haiti, for my child whom I don’t even know and their birth family. For God to protect them and love on them as well as the whole country of Haiti. I’m so glad to hear things, while not perfect by any means, are okay with W and his O.
