We made it! We are so exhausted, having spent all night on flights or in airports. We arrived in Port-au-prince about 1:40pm Haiti-time and the experience was so different than stateside!
A sweet young Haitian boy introduced himself to us at baggage claim, he was 14 and told us about how he lived in the states and also in Haiti in an outer lying area, and he liked to play basketball and baseball. He was the first person to really greet us with a smile here and it warmed my heart!
Getting from baggage claim, thru the breezeway to the hotel shuttle and then the hotel was a crazy scene from the movies! We literally stepped out and made a beeline with our hotel rep through these walls of Haitian locals on either side of the walkway, all yelling and trying to get our attention – or maybe just having conversation over the top of us?? Lol then we got in the van, I looked at Kris and said, “I don’t think they use seatbelts here, but I’m pretty sure we should!” As we clicked our buckles into place the van launched through potholed parking lot at breakneck speed, honking constantly. Then we proceeded to pull out into full on rush hour traffic almost side swiping about 3 motorbikes in the process, but instead of joining the line of traffic our driver laid on the horn and wove in and out and around all the cars, driving on both sides of the road! I half expected us to hop the curb and scream through the market! Lol
The hotel turned out to be (thankfully) only a 5-minute roller coaster ride away from the airport. Unfortunately, for my stomach, all the drivers here follow suit and we will be doing that every day for the 30-60 min drive to and from the orphanage! Haha! I’ll try to take video one of these trips so you can all have the full experience!
We are turning in for the night. It’s only 8:30 here but we are falling asleep with our eyes open! Tomorrow we get picked up at 9:30 to go meet W for the first time!!! Excited and nervous!
Will post again tomorrow!
